speak truth

We know that the world is not fair, and it often feels like the game is rigged and the die has been set. That’s the system we live in, the system that is responsible for unsustainable development and economic growth, as well as accelerated climate breakdown and ecological collapse.

This is a system where greed and is what motivates many as well as a relentless and inequitable drive by some to hoard vast global resources at the expense of people, place and planet and future generations. And that climate child, is why now more than ever, we need people to speak their truth.

Tell your stories and say what you really think about the ways things are. Speak freely and openly about how unfair, unsettling and cruel many things are at this time. Particularly to the most vulnerable people in the world and our natural world.

I enjoy the truth, even when it is unsettling, because it is difficult to argue with. It doesn’t have to be cruel, but it has be delivered in a way where it can be understood before it can be accepted. I believe the truth is neutral and objective and you know it when you hear it, because it makes sense. It is actually enjoyable to hear it, as so often people don’t speak the truth. It is often a breath of fresh air.

In my opinion the truth is often denied, discounted, scorned at and more often than not, it is not wanted. As it often creates dissonance and discomfort for those, who are benefiting from concealing it. It can really unsettle those who have benefited from it being hidden.

I believe several things can be true at once and that sometimes two seemingly contradictory truths can co-exist.

Some people believe that there is no such thing as truth, there are only perspectives.

And while I respect that perspective, I cannot concur. As I know how beautiful, magical, scary and freeing the truth is when I stumble across it or find my way to it.

There are several quotes about truth that have shaped my relationship with it.

Gloria Steinem stated, “The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.” “Speak truth to power” is a well-established activist mantra but my new favourite quote on the matter comes from Ursula K. Le Gain “One voice speaking truth is a greater force than fleets and armies.”

Speaking my truth has lost me relationships, because people did not like what I had to say. But I prefer to be honest and true, because I also believe in doing what is right and living a life of integrity. To me that is the best way to live.

“Honesty is telling the truth to ourselves and others. Integrity is living that truth.” Kenneth H. Blanchard

Speak your truth about climate change, speak your truth about the environment, speak your truth about what kind of world you wish to live in. In a time where lies and corruption seem to be ruining the planet, telling the truth becomes the most powerful thing we can do. Silence serves those who are causing harm at this time, so every act rooted in beautiful truth and courageous integrity, is an important act of dissent.

“I dissent” Ruth Bader Ginsburg

The ripples created by every act of truth speaking may help to create majestic waves of change. Speak your truth and see what happens…
